Exploring Pannobile: A Journey into Burgenland’s Coalition of Exceptional Winemakers

The Pannobile group, celebrating 30 years of collaboration, was initiated by John Nittnaus. The term “Pannobile” is derived from Pannonia, the historical name for a region that was a Roman province in western Hungary, paired with “Nobile,” which encapsulates the philosophy of the collective.

The Pannobile group consists of eight wineries located in Burgenland, all dedicated to producing unique wines that authentically represent their terroir. Recently, a small group gathered at the Preisinger winery in Gols to engage in a themed tasting of select wines from this ensemble. Most of the wines do not carry regional names due to strict Austrian wine laws which must be adhered to for appellation labeling.

The tasting featured a variety of impressive wines, showcasing the creativity and skill of these producers. Below is a selection of some highlights from the tasting:

Sparkling Wines

  • Judith Beck Pet Nat Bambule! 2024 Österreich: Comprising 90% Pinot Blanc and 10% skin-fermented Muskat Ottonel, this wine is characterized by its complexity and fruity notes of apple and pear. Rated 93/100.

  • Gsellmann Pet Nat OMG Rosé 2024 Österreich: This Sankt Laurent Pet Nat is a vibrant pink/orange color, delivering tart cherry fruit with a tangy, expressive profile. Rated 93/100.

  • Pittnauer Pitt Nat Blanc 2025 Weinland: Notable for its fresh and clean attributes, thanks to the inclusion of skin-fermented Sauvignon. Rated 91/100.

White Wines

  • RennerSistas Intergalactic 2025 Weinland: A blend that features Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, and more, this white wine offers textural complexity with bright fruit notes and a saltiness that elevates it. Rated 94/100.

  • Claus Preisinger Fruitloops weiß 2024 Österreich: This intriguing combination of Traminer, Muscat, and Scheurebe has been skin-fermented, resulting in an aromatic profile with structured layers and energy. Rated 94/100.

  • Heinrich Edelgraben 2024 Leithaberg DAC: A blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay from low-yield vines, this wine exudes complexity with taut citrus notes and precision. Rated 96/100.

Red Wines

  • Anita and Hans Nittnaus Blaufränkisch 2021 Leithaberg DAC: Showcasing the finesse of Blaufränkisch from limestone soils, this wine is defined by its purity and layered black cherry fruit. Rated 96/100.

  • Judith Beck Pannobile 2023 Österreich: Combining Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, this wine presents a vivid and juicy experience with a slightly wild and spicy nose. Rated 92/100.

  • Andreas Gsellmann Altenberg Blaufränkisch St. Margarethen 2024 Burgenland: Fresh and elegant, this wine combines juicy red cherries with a serious approach to drinkability. Rated 94/100.
