Exploring Canada’s Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys: The Fascinating Burrowing Owl

By | 18 June 2026

Burrowing Owl is a significant winery located in the Okanagan Valley, known for its strong commitment to conservation efforts. Established by Midge and Jim Wyse in 1993, it originally focused on growing grapes, becoming one of the pioneers of red vinifera varieties in the region. By 1997, they had shifted to winemaking, and their winery has since become a major tourist attraction, contributing over CA$2 million to conservation projects aimed at preserving the burrowing owl, which inspired their name.

The Wyse family began with 150 acres of grapes, later expanding to 300 acres—the largest contiguous vineyard in Canada at the time. However, a partnership split led to the Wyses retaining 130 acres, and they continued to grow their vineyards, acquiring additional land in Osoyoos and Similkameen and buying Wild Goose winery in 2001, which added to their holdings.

During a recent visit, brand ambassador Steve Neumann shared that the winery experienced a 20% loss of vines due to harsh winter conditions and is now in the process of replanting. He noted a shift in preparedness among Okanagan winemakers, emphasizing a proactive approach to future winters.
