Cas ‘Amaro is emerging as a significant player in the wine tourism and winemaking scene in Portugal. Established in 2016 when the company acquired a historic estate in Alenquer, located in the Lisboa region, Cas ‘Amaro transformed a 4.5-hectare vineyard into a luxurious accommodation site and began producing wines from organically grown grapes in 2022.
In addition to Alenquer, the company has expanded its reach by acquiring properties across various renowned Portuguese wine regions. This includes Herdade Monte de Castelete in Alentejo, a 70-hectare estate, a 30-hectare vineyard in the Douro region, and the 25-hectare Quinta do Busto in the Vinho Verde region, along with Quinta da Fontalta in the Dão.
The showcase of their wines occurred during a tasting session with Ricardo Santos, who serves as part-time winemaking director, alongside his own project, XXVI Talhas, in Alentejo.
The tasting produced several noteworthy wines:
- Cas ‘Amaro Sercial Pét Nat 2024, Lisboa: Noted for its lively character despite being non-sulfited and non-disgorged, its bright grapefruit and lime flavors garnered a score of 92/100.
- Madame Pió Sercial Branca Reserva 2024, Lisboa: After aging six months in oak, this mineral and spicy wine with high acidity earned a rating of 90/100.
- Madame Pió Arinto Reserva 2021, Lisboa: Praised for its weight and acidity, this wine’s purity and citrus tones received a score of 92/100.
- Mitologia Encruzado 2023, Dão: This wine stood out for its elegant and citrus-driven profile, achieving 93/100.
- Falatório Rosé 2023, Lisboa: With its dry style featuring citrus, apple, and cherry, it scored 91/100.
- Falatório Bastardo 2022, Lisboa: A light red with cherry and ripe strawberry notes rated 93/100.
- Implause Tinto Field Blend 2023, Alentejo: This wine’s juicy and vivid character earned an impressive score of 93/100.
- Caminho Jaen 2023, Dão: Notable for its expressive and fresh fruitiness, it also scored 93/100.
- Madame Pió Castelão 2022, Lisboa: With its bright cherry flavors, this wine achieved a remarkable score of 94/100.
- Madame Pió Tinta Miuda 2021, Lisboa: Although slightly tannic and bright, it received a score of 90/100.
