Celebrating 40 Years of Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Spottswoode Estate, recognized for its family legacy in Napa Valley, has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of producing Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in the late 19th century, Spottswoode was transformed into a respected wine estate by Dr. Jack Novak and his wife, Mary, who took over in the 1970s and revitalized the vineyard’s practices. Their commitment to maintaining the vineyard’s historical character while improving its grape production has established Spottswoode as a landmark in fine wine.
Over the years, Spottswoode has produced only three wines from its 45 acres of vineyards, focusing on quality rather than volume, with an annual production of about 5,000 cases. The estate is often compared to illustrious names like Château Margaux for its perfumed elegance and aging potential. Located at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate that enhances its viticultural potential.
After Mary’s passing in 2016, her daughters Beth and Lindy Novak continued the family’s commitment to sustainable practices. In a notable celebration of their legacy, they auctioned all 40 vintages of their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon in September 2025, with proceeds benefiting Napa Green, a local environmental organization. This initiative underscores Spottswoode’s long-standing dedication to the environment, as the estate has embraced organic and biodynamic farming methods since the 1980s, and recently achieved B-Corp certification.
Spottswoode primarily cultivates Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside smaller amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The winery’s current winemaker, Aron Weinkauf, emphasizes a block-by-block approach to vinification, utilizing diverse techniques and aging vessels to craft wines of exceptional character. The estate’s Sauvignon Blanc, introduced in 1984, showcases a sophisticated complexity and is also a product of the family’s commitment to quality.
As Spottswoode continues to flourish, the family’s philosophy—grounded in sustainability, tradition, and a deep respect for the land—remains evident in every bottle produced. The 40 years of the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a testament to their journey and legacy in the world of fine wine.
