Discovering Matthias Müller: Exceptional Wines from the Mittelrhein Region of Germany

Matthias Müller is a family-run winery located in the Mittelrhein region of Germany, recognized for its beautiful landscape along the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz, which has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 2002. Their estate spans 20 hectares in the Bopparder Hamm area, characterized by steep, south-facing slate soils. The winery features prominent single vineyards such as Engelstein, Rabenlei, Ohlenberg, Feuerlay, and Mandelstein, along with a dedicated sparkling wine brand, Sektmanufaktur Momentum.

During a tasting session at the Cool Climate Symposium in Copenhagen, I had the opportunity to explore several wines crafted by Matthias Müller, particularly those from the Momentum and Rhine Schiefer lines.

Here are some of the standout wines from the tasting:

  • Momentum Riesling Brut 2023: A refreshing sparkling wine with lively lemon and grapefruit notes, showing excellent purity. Rated 91/100.

  • Momentum Blanc de Blanc Brut Nature 2020: A blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, half aged in old oak. This wine is bright and linear with a mineral character, achieving a score of 92/100.

  • Matthias Müller Rhein Schiefer Riesling Trocken 2024: With an 11% alcohol content, this wine presents a textured profile with lovely mineral notes, earning 92/100.

  • Matthias Müller Bopparder Hamm Riesling Trocken Steilstück 2024: Aged in stainless steel, this Riesling offers balance and tension with crystalline citrus flavors, rated 93/100.

  • Matthias Müller Bopparder Hamm Fässerlay Riesling 2024: Exhibiting a fine and textural profile with saline characteristics, it carries a focus on lemon flavors, scoring 94/100.

  • Matthias Müller Bopparder Hamm Mandelstein GG Riesling Trocken 2024: Noted for its linear, mineral qualities with both ripeness and finesse, it receives high praise with a score of 95/100.

  • Matthias Müller Bopparder Hamm Feuerlay GG Riesling Trocken 2023: This wine showcases a bright yet rich profile and mineral precision, also rated 95/100.
