Exploring Hidden Gems: Grape Escapes in Dalmatia’s Off-the-Beaten-Path Treasures

By | 25 May 2026

The glistening waters of Dalmatia’s Adriatic coast attract millions of tourists every year. While many visitors come for the sea air and the region’s ancient history, an increasingly enjoyable way to explore Dalmatia is through its high-quality wines and unique grape varieties.

With over 5,500 hectares of vineyards, there’s much to discover. Although grape names like Plavac Mali, Tribidag, Pošip, Maraština, and Debit may not yet be widely recognizable, they offer a delightful journey through the varied landscapes of this picturesque region.

Carved from Stone

Just a few kilometers from Primošten near Split lies Bukovac, an extraordinary vineyard area of just 18.4 hectares. Vines are carved into rocky terrain, meticulously excavated and transformed entirely by hand. The vineyard grows Babić, a red grape variety arranged in mosaic-like patterns across tiny plots surrounded by low stone walls, creating a striking lunar-like landscape.

The wines produced here are remarkable, featuring a blend of red cherry fruits and Mediterranean herbs, offering structured and mineral-rich flavors.

Go Fishing

In the area around Vrgorac, the Gašpar wines thrive close to Biokovo Mountain. The soils here are primarily white, a remnant of a former lake that was drained for construction in 1938. Now vineyards thrive in the valley, which is flooded for several months each year, leaving behind invaluable reserves for the vines after the waters recede.

While the valley is awash with wine production, the temporary lake allows producers like Gašpar to catch catfish alongside cultivating their vines.

Island Hopping

No trip to Dalmatia is complete without exploring the vineyards of islands such as Brač, Hvar, and Korčula. Each island offers unique characteristics shaped by its landscapes and climates. Brač is known for its dramatic white karst and rock terrain, while Hvar’s warm conditions favor the production of richer, bolder wines. Korčula, with its cooler, sheltered coastal vineyards, appeals to those looking for a greener escape amidst hilly terrains.

Embark on a vinous adventure in Croatia by packing your hiking shoes and exploring the less-traveled paths of Dalmatia. This region offers an array of wines and experiences that go beyond the summer crowds.
