Exploring Portugal: A Journey Through Seven Exquisite Wines at Vinho da Casa in Lisbon

A recent masterclass took place at Vinho da Casa in Lisbon, showcasing a selection of wines from across Portugal. Held in May 2025 at the Torel Palace Hotel, this event featured various winemakers who provided insights into their wines, offering a glimpse into the diverse wine production in the country.

  1. Quinta das Bágeiras Pai Abel Branco 2013, Bairrada: Winemaker Mário Sérgio presented this wine made from younger plantings of Maria Gomes and Bical. It boasts a high limestone content, demonstrating purity with taut citrus fruit and subtle marmalade hints, alongside a saline twist. The wine is aging beautifully, exhibiting a nice texture and good acidity. Rating: 95/100

  2. Anselmo Mendes Curtimenta 2012, Vinho Verde: Anselmo Mendes has refined his skin-fermented white wine technique. This version, with just 24 hours on the skins, offers complexity with toasty notes and appealing lime and pear fruit. The palate shows precision and a lovely crystalline character. Rating: 94/100

  3. Casa de Passarella O Fugitivo Vinhas Centenàrias 2019, Dão: This wine features floral and expressive aromas of red cherries and plums, complemented by a subtle spiciness. The palate is elegant, with a stony and slightly peppery finish. Rating: 95/100

  4. Wine & Soul Pintas 2017, Douro: Originating from a special two-hectare vineyard, this wine is concentrated with bold flavors of blackcurrant and black cherry, along with mint and herb notes. It exhibits excellent structure and an elegant finish. Rating: 95/100

  5. Cartuxa Tinto Colheita 2009, Alentejo: A blend characterized by earthy, spicy, and savory notes, this dense wine has evident development and finishes grippy, yet retains ample fruit. Rating: 93/100

  6. Falua Conde Vimioso 30 Anos Tinto 2005, Tejo: A celebratory wine made in magnum, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon matured in new oak. It has a captivating nose and a palate with a cool minty edge, showcasing sweet fruit with a robust structure. Rating: 95/100

  7. Barbeito Trés Amigos Meio Doce 50 Anos NV, Madeira: This exceptional blend consists of old Verdelho, Boal, and Malvasia. Despite its high sugar concentration, it remains fresh and complex, exhibiting citrus peel and raisin notes while being beautifully balanced with acidity. Rating: 97/100

The masterclass was an exciting opportunity to experience the richness of Portuguese wines, supported by the insights offered by the winemakers, each representing different wine regions across the country.
