After tasting nearly 30 examples from the 2016 Côte-Rôtie vintage, there’s a strong argument that it’s one of the great sleeper vintages of recent times, offering impressive quality, classicism, and consistency. Although it’s not as celebrated as the outstanding 2015 vintage, which is noted for its power, the 2016s stand out for their balance and elegance.
The growing season in 2016 began with a mild winter but saw a late bud break as compared to previous years. Although the spring was marked by wet weather and occasional mildew, conditions improved significantly in July with the arrival of hot, dry temperatures, leading to a successful harvest in mid-October. Winemakers noted that the late harvests allowed grapes to reach full ripeness, contributing to the vintage’s signature delicacy and precision.
Jean-Paul Jamet expressed his appreciation for this vintage, pointing out how gradual ripening from the end of September through mid-October imparted elegance and freshness to the wines. These wines have aged well into their tenth year, transitioning past an awkward phase and are generally ready to enjoy now, with only a few requiring additional cellaring.
The 2016s are characterized by their clear reflection of terroir and house style, with southern Côte-Rôtie wines being perfumed and elegant, while those from the Brune side exhibit darker, more complex profiles. Winemakers confirmed that none of the tasted wines were showing signs of decline, with many capable of aging an additional seven to eight years or longer for the most exceptional bottles.
Reflecting on the winemaking progression over the past decade, it’s evident that practices have evolved. Some winemakers have shifted from using larger barrels to shorter aging times in foudres to maintain the wines’ freshness and expression. The 2016 vintage exemplifies a harmonious blend of modern techniques and traditional methods, resulting in classic Rhône wines.
