By | 8 July 2026

The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2026 showcased an impressive array of sparkling wines, culminating in a dramatic reveal of Best in Show winners. This year, Champagne took the lead, securing two of the coveted awards, solidifying its reputation as the standard-bearer for sparkling wines.

The event highlighted not only the prowess of Champagne but also introduced noteworthy contenders from Italy and the UK. The judges recognized the exceptional quality of wines from Franciacorta in Italy and celebrated local talent from the UK, demonstrating the growing diversity in sparkling wine production.

Champagne: The Benchmark

Two sparkling gems from Champagne, the De Saint-Gall Orpale Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru and Charles Collin Cuvée Charles Blanc de Blancs, both from the 2012 vintage, emerged as the champions. Charles Curtis MW, Regional Chair for Champagne, noted the significance of this vintage—a year characterized by challenging weather conditions that ultimately yielded exceptional fruit, resulting in wines that combine richness with finesse.

A British Triumph

Following last year’s win for an English sparkling wine, this year saw Kent’s Balfour Blanc De Blancs 2018 claim its place among the winners. Fergus Elias, the head winemaker, shared insights into his journey, initially aiming for a career in aviation until a rugby injury redirected his path to viticulture. The Balfour wine, crafted from the finest Chardonnay, showcases the potential of English sparkling wines, demonstrating a style that is distinctly its own while still drawing inspiration from traditional Champagne methods.

Franciacorta Shines Bright

Franciacorta, Italy’s emergent star in the sparkling wine arena, celebrated its first Best in Show award with the Freccianera Satèn Brut 2022. The wine, made entirely from Chardonnay, stands out for its creamy texture and refined palate. The region, known for its commitment to the traditional method and its unique expression, continues to make waves in the international wine scene.
