Sometimes, seizing the opportunity is essential, much like Ferris Bueller’s iconic philosophy. Recently, after serving as a judge at a wine competition with fellow panelists Cokie Ponikvar and Christopher Waters, I took the chance to enjoy a meal at Treadwell, a top restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Over the years, I’ve visited Treadwell multiple times, and each experience has been delightful, featuring a varied and delectable menu set in a charming atmosphere. One highlight is the restaurant’s exceptional wine list, particularly its robust Champagne selection.

We decided to indulge in some remarkable wines during our lunch:

  • Champagne Ulysses-Colin Les Maillons Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut NV, France: This Champagne, based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in March 2020, showcases a lovely golden hue. Its complexity is outstanding, with concentrated flavors of peach and pear, complemented by crystalline citrus notes and fine toasty nuances. It’s textural and refined on the palate, displaying beautiful development, rated at 96/100.

  • Champagne La Rogerie Le Bourg Sud Grand Cru Réserve Perpétuelle NV, France: With 13% alcohol, this sparkling wine hails from the Petit-Boxler couple, who produce wines in Alsace. Its base is a reserve perpetuelle from 2021, disgorged in January 2024. It’s crystalline and vibrant, offering a focused citrus character, taut yet textural, finishing with a delightful salty note, rated at 95/100.

  • Comando G La Bruja 2023, Sierra de Gredos, DO Ceberos, Spain: This wine, with 14% alcohol, is supple and elegant, characterized by sweet red cherry and redcurrant fruit, finished with fine spicy details. Its elegance and precision, along with expressive freshness, made it particularly enjoyable, rated at 95/100.

The lunch was not just a feast for the palate but also an opportunity to relax and relish exceptional wines in a remarkable setting.
