Vital Signs of the 2023 Ornellaia: A Wine Lover’s Insight

By | 11 June 2026

The release of the 2023 Ornellaia wine signals a moment of both challenge and renewal for the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia estate. This vintage has unfolded amidst significant personnel changes that have left the estate’s leadership in transition, but it also reveals a bright potential thanks to its new technical director, Marco Balsimelli.

The turmoil began in March 2023 with the unexpected departure of Axel Heinz, Ornellaia’s respected estate director for 18 years, who announced he would be leaving for a role at Château Lascombes in Bordeaux. His departure was soon followed by winemaker Olga Fusari, who accepted a position at Ruffino to oversee its Bolgheri project. By September, CEO Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja also announced his retirement after 24 years in leadership, marking a pivotal turnover within the estate’s upper echelon.

Despite the surprising exodus, Lamberto Frescobaldi, president of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, appeared unfazed during the launch of the 2023 vintage at a Vienna restaurant. This confidence may stem from the solid foundation built since the Frescobaldi family assumed full control of the estate in 2015, allowing both Ornellaia and sister estate Masseto to thrive independently.

The 2023 growing season proved a challenge, with a mild winter followed by a rainy spring that brought doubts about the quality of the grapes. However, timely rains in late August and cooler September nights helped revive the season, allowing for fruitful conditions.

Amid these challenges, Marco Balsimelli joined the team, bringing a fresh perspective from his years in Bordeaux. His expertise has been pivotal in producing the energetic and vibrant 2023 Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore, characterized by its vitality—a theme emphasized by the estate for this vintage. The blend, made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, showcases the robust yet refined character of the estate, embodying the optimism surrounding this new chapter.

The release is also marked by an ongoing artistic collaboration, the Vendemmia d’Artista project, with Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović, which aims to merge art and wine while supporting cultural initiatives through auction proceeds.

In summary, the 2023 Ornellaia represents both a reflection on past transitions and an optimistic step towards the future, blending high-quality wine production with creative artistic ventures that highlight the estate’s commitment to innovation and cultural legacy.
