2024 Burgundy Tasting Notes: Côte de Beaune—Puligny-Montrachet

Sarah Marsh MW continues her exploration of the 2024 Burgundy vintage with insights on producers in Puligny-Montrachet.

Domaine des Cabottes

In 2022, Artémis Domaines merged with Bouchard Père & Fils, leading to the formation of Domaine des Cabottes, which will showcase the finest Bouchard cuvées starting from the 2023 vintage, to be released in 2026. The wines are expected to be vinified and matured in a new winery currently under construction at Château de Puligny-Montrachet. Both Bouchard Père & Fils and Domaine des Cabottes will operate independently, each with dedicated winemaking teams, while Frédéric Weber will oversee Domaine des Cabottes.

Tasting Highlights:

  • Meursault Premier Cru Les Genevrières: Displays a surprisingly rich honeysuckle aroma with touches of oak. It’s juicy upfront, becoming refined and delicate with floral notes and a saline finish. (2028–34, 94–95)

  • Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru: Fruity and precise, offering a cool lemon note with a touch of sea salt. It demonstrates charm and fragrance, with a lingering finish. (2028–34, 95)

  • Chardonnay from the Dessus and Dessous subdivisions of Clos de La Mousse is noted for its fresh tarragon freshness and light yet complex structure. (2028–34+, 92)

Domaine Jean Chartron

Paul Chavy reflects on the challenging spring of 2024 which made vineyard access difficult, although their conventional viticulture helped mitigate mildew issues. They maintained an aging process that has evolved to 11 months in barrel for whites, emphasizing freshness and integrated flavors.

  • Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos du Cailleret: Assertively strikes the palate with its punchy intensity and savory finish. (2029–35+, 96)

  • Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes: A naturally creamy and slightly spicy profile, with enjoyable notes of white peach. (2027–32, 88)

Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy

The domaine aimed for a more concentrated profile with a carefully monitored harvest starting on September 16. Their approach to aging involves utilizing larger barrels to enhance finesse amidst warmer vintages.

  • Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières: Offers a lovely texture with intensity and a long finish, resulting in a delightful balance. (2028–34, 93)

Domaine/Maison Olivier Leflaive

Under new leadership, Solène Panigai has emphasized maintaining the freshness of the wines while battling mildew challenges. The yield was significantly lower for reds, affecting overall production.

  • Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Pucelles: This wine expresses floral freshness and finesse, making it an excellent representative of its typicity. (2028–35, 95)

Conclusion

The 2024 vintage in Burgundy, particularly in Côte de Beaune, has shown promise with lively acidity and refined profiles, distinguishing itself as a vintage to watch closely in coming years.
