The region of Goriška Brda in Slovenia is home to one of its top wine producers, Edi Simčič. During my second visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Aleks Simčič, the current head of the winery, along with his sons, Jure and Jakob, who are also integral to the business.
The winery’s history began with Aleks’ father, Edi, who started his career in a local cooperative. After retiring at 54, Edi focused on the family vineyards, which had been largely abandoned as her relatives had emigrated to Argentina during economic strife after World War II. The first wine produced in 1991 was the result of Edi’s passion and hard work, giving rise to the winery we know today, which has expanded significantly over the years.
The Edi Simčič winery now spans 13.5 hectares with plans to cultivate an additional 1.3 hectares. It produces between 70,000 to 75,000 bottles annually. Aleks left his corporate job in 2014 to fully commit to the winery’s growth, assisted by his sons, who are also developing their own wine project within the winery.
Notably, the Simčič winery produces more red wines than white, primarily focusing on Merlot, the second most cultivated grape in the region. Goriška Brda’s unique Mediterranean climate, influenced by the nearby Alps, provides diverse growing conditions with various soil types resulting from its geological history.
The winery is known for its white varieties, including Rebula (or Ribolla Gialla) and Sauvignonasse, alongside international varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The reds comprise mainly Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with producers like Simčič also reviving lesser-known varieties such as Schiopettino (Black Rebula).
The wines crafted here reflect a commitment to authenticity and vibrancy while minimizing the use of oak in producing whites. Below are some highlighted wines from their recent vintages:
- Edi Simčič Rebula 2023 – Fresh with taut citrus notes and herbal hints. Rated 93/100.
- Edi Simčič Fojana Rebula 2022 – Complex with spice and a mineral finish, rated 94/100.
- Edi Simčič Malvazija 2023 – Delicate and fresh, offering subtle herbal notes. Rated 93/100.
- Edi Simčič Duet Riserva 1999 – Beautifully developed with silky dark fruit and a hint of spice, rated 96/100.
- Edi Simčič Kozana Merlot 2019 – Concentrated with ripe berries, noted for its depth and expression, rated 96/100.
