By | 13 September 2025

This recent masterclass in Budapest highlighted Hungary’s red grape varieties, led by two prominent winegrowers: Andrea Gere, from the esteemed Gere winery, and György Lőrincz Jr., who transitioned from professional football to viticulture after training in Austria, Tokaj, and New Zealand. Hungary may be small, but it boasts 22 diverse wine regions, making it one of the most intriguing wine countries according to György.

Notable Grape Varieties

Kadarka
Kadarka is one of Hungary’s earliest red grape varieties, introduced before the 16th century. Once dominant, it covered 95% of Hungary’s vineyards by the 19th century, but its delicate nature makes it difficult to cultivate. György compares it to Pinot Noir due to its finesse. A standout example was the Szentpéteri Wine Cellar Kadarka Rosé Brut MT NV, which displayed bright citrus fruit and impressive energy (91/100).

Another quality Kadarka is Eszterbauer Nagyapám Kadarka 2024, known for its elegance with pure red cherry and raspberry notes, earning a remarkable score of 94/100.

Kékfrankos
Regarded as Hungary’s most critical red grape, Kékfrankos spans nearly 8,000 hectares and produces a range of wines from sparkling to structured reds. The Illés Winery Kékfrankos 2022 is an elegant representation, showcasing fresh, mineral qualities and a well-managed finish (94/100).

Turán
A native Hungarian variety, Turán can produce unique styles with deep color and aromatic complexity. The Luka Pincészet Soproni Túran 2019 offered rich, powerful flavors with a mix of lush black fruits and a balanced structure, rated at 93/100.

Cabernet Franc
In Villány, Cabernet Franc thrives, forming the foundation of the region’s special Villányi Franc brand. The Attila Gere Villányi Franc Ördögárok 2021 exemplified this grape with its dense blackberry fruit and classic structure, receiving a score of 94/100.

Eger
György emphasized Eger for its volcanic soils and cool climate, ideal for growing wine. The St Andrea Winery Hangács Cru Egri Bikavér Grand Superior 2022 is a notable blend featuring over 50% Kékfrankos, reported to be rich and structured, with a score of 94/100.
