As buds spring to life across the UK’s 1,000+ vineyards, owners are optimistic not only for a bountiful harvest in 2024 but also for an exciting summer filled with events to celebrate the return of the sun.
The UK now features over 300 vineyards and wineries that welcome visitors, offering numerous options for day trips and overnight stays. The rising interest in wine tourism is evident; visitor numbers to UK wine estates surged to 1.5 million in 2023, marking a 55% increase from the previous year. With new activities being introduced and existing ones revitalized, the industry anticipates a further 20% growth in visitor numbers through 2029.
Nick Toomey from Rathfinny Wine Estate emphasized the importance of wine tourism in creating a genuine connection with guests, noting that it enhances not just sales but the overall experience for visitors through education about the wine-making process. For many, winery visits represent a significant portion of overall income, underscoring their importance for long-term success.
To assist visitors, WineGB has launched a travel planner that highlights a variety of options, from festivals to wine trains and charming accommodation spots. English Wine Week is planned for June 21-29, 2025, promising to showcase the best of what UK vineyards have to offer.
