Discovering Moldova: A Hidden Gem in the World of Wine

By | 2 October 2026

At a recent event in London, I had the opportunity to taste a variety of Moldovan wines. Despite being one of the few wine regions I hadn’t yet visited, I previously concluded an extensive exploration of Moldovan wine, having tasted 178 different samples.

Moldova boasts a remarkable 109,700 hectares of vineyards situated between latitudes 45 and 49 degrees North, which provides an ideal climate for grape growing. Interestingly, around 80% of the vineyards are dedicated to international grape varieties, while only 20% are planted with local and Caucasian varieties like Saperavi and Rară Neagră.
