Sipping in Style: Our Burgundy Expert’s Home Wine Selections – $15 White Burgundies and Magnums of Riesling

By | 21 April 2026

During my workday, I sometimes find myself procrastinating and daydreaming, often about wine. At the end of a long day spent writing about wines, nothing relaxes me more than enjoying a glass of my favorite selections at home.

Each wine I choose is tailored to its audience, primarily my wife, for whom I cook most evenings. We generally keep things simple; at least once a week, I prepare a roast chicken along with a fresh salad. For this meal, a reliable wine is essential.

Recently, I discovered a delightful white Burgundy priced at just $15: the Domaine Thevenet Mâcon-Pierreclos 2023. The grapes are sourced from vineyards at an elevation of 350 meters and are vinified without oak. This particular wine boasts an impressive balance of lemony fruit and minerality, all while remaining light and refreshing. It pairs beautifully with food, making it an everyday choice without sacrificing quality.

When hosting friends, I pull out all the stops, often preparing a côte de boeuf, a generous double-thick bone-in rib of beef roast alongside root vegetables and haricots verts. For guests who have a discerning palate, I often reach for bottles from reputable producers. A standout has been the Passetoutgrain ‘l’Exception’ from Domaine Michel Lafarge. Made from Gamay and Pinot Noir planted nearly a century ago, this wine is crafted with care and offers remarkable depth, all for around $32.

As a New Yorker, I also enjoy dining out. One of my favorite places is Wu’s Wonton King in Chinatown, known for its outstanding wonton soup and fresh seafood. Here, I often opt for a dry Riesling to accompany the diverse flavors. Recently, I shared magnums of J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Auslese Trocken 2015 with friends, showcasing its profile of apricots, lemon peel, floral notes, and a hint of earthiness—a perfect complement to the culinary delights of the evening.

In these moments of food and wine, I find joy not just in the flavors, but in sharing experiences with loved ones.
