Tasting four different Champagnes for comparison revealed a standout performer, Ayala.

Champagne Ayala Brut Majeur NV, France

This Champagne is blended from 70 crus and 120 vinifications, featuring 55% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 15% Pinot Meunier. With a base from the challenging 2021 vintage, it utilizes 43% reserve wines and has a dosage of 6 g/l. The result is a bright and lively wine, complex in flavor with notes of cherry, pear, and peach, rounded out by a spiced, toasty finish and a hint of saltiness. It delivers unexpected richness and balance, earning a rating of 92/100, especially commendable given its price of around £25 from The Wine Society.

Champagne Bollinger Cuvée Speciale NV, France

Marketed with a special 007 branding, this Champagne lacks detailed information on the label, though it offers a fruity and bright experience with substantial depth. Its profile includes hints of honey and cedar, alongside assertive acidity and a refreshing finish. It scored 91/100, with a somewhat variable pricing structure; it usually listed at £58 but often promoted to £44—this particular bottle was a special at Tesco for £34.

Champagne Albert Lebrun Premier Cru Brut NV, France

This offering is characterized by its juicy and vibrant profile, presenting citrus and grape notes alongside a fresh acidity, with mandarin and grapefruit zest. While not particularly complex, it is bright, fruity, and quite enjoyable, finishing slightly sweet, hence it received an 88/100 rating. It retails around £26 from a small producer in Avize.

Champagne Forget-Brimont Brut Premier Cru NV, France

Sourced from a producer with 19 hectares of vineyards, this wine has a composition of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier, and 20% Chardonnay, with 40-50% reserve wine. With 30 months of aging on lees, it brings a lively bouquet of lemon, white peach, and table grapes, layered with subtle spice and toast notes. With its appealing fruit essence and touch of sweetness, it scored 91/100, typically available for approximately £30.

In summary, Ayala emerged as the top choice in this comparative study, celebrated for its complexity and depth.
