At Home with Adi and Eben
During a recent trip to Swartland’s Paardeberg, I had the pleasure of meeting two notable figures in South African wine, Adi Badenhorst and Eben Sadie, who, despite their different approaches, demonstrate a shared dedication to the craft.
Arriving at Badenhorst Family Wines, I was quickly ushered into their rustic-chic milking shed, where the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The wines of Adi Badenhorst, while he often claims they are produced carelessly, reflect a mindful approach to natural winemaking. His commitment to maintaining the vitality of old vines in a hot, dry climate is evident. Badenhorst boasts a broad array of wines, showcasing old vineyards and a diverse selection of 73 grape varieties, all cultivated with respect to their environment.
In contrast, next door at Sadie Family Wines, I found myself in a grand new winery that starkly contrasts with the humble Badenhorst setting. Beneath its modern design lies a meticulous philosophy – Eben Sadie crafts wines that embody the unique terroir of Swartland, which features limestone, slate, and granite soils. His approach focuses on dry farming and preserving the heritage of the vineyards he has planted since his start in 1999.
Both winemakers are known for producing enticing whites that reflect the coastal limestone regions; Badenhorst’s Sout Van die Aarde Palomino and Sadie’s Skerpioen blend offer beautifully distinct palate experiences. While Badenhorst uses simple techniques and a light touch, Sadie’s wines are more structured and refined, employing gentle extraction methods and unique fermentation techniques.
At Badenhorst, I experienced a relaxed evening of community and conviviality over pizza, mingling with both local and young, aspiring winemakers, including Sakkie Mouton, who presented his impressive creations. Meanwhile, Sadie’s wines, like the Soldaart 2023 and Columella 2022, showcased his blend of tradition and modernity, focusing on freshness and complexity.
Despite their differences, both winemakers successfully express the essence of Swartland through their wines, which boldly capture the character of their surroundings. It’s a testament to the beauty found in both the rugged environment and the dedication of those who cultivate it, leading to a vibrant expression of South African wine.
