The story of Villa Pomona traces back to Giovanni Bandino Bandini, the great-grandfather of the current owner, Monica Raspi. In 1890, Giovanni purchased a building previously used as a brick factory, along with 90 hectares of land, capitalizing on the area’s rich clay soils. Over the years, the vineyard faced challenges, leading to its abandonment by Monica’s grandfather. However, in 1982, Monica’s parents, Enzo and Inge, revitalized the family winery by acquiring two vineyards.
Monica, who has lived near Castellina in Chianti since 1991, initially pursued a career as a veterinarian. In 2005, when her parents expressed their desire to retire from winemaking, Monica was faced with a crucial decision: continue the family legacy or let it go. Ultimately, she sold her veterinary clinic and embraced the role of a winegrower, officially starting in 2007.
Monica plans to follow a similar path with her own children: she will offer them the chance to take over the winery, and if they choose not to, she will sell. Fortunately, her son Cosimo shows interest in the family business. He has studied winemaking and now works in the vineyard with his partner Andrea, focusing more on vineyard management than cellar duties. Currently, Monica’s daughter is not involved in the winery.
Villa Pomona consists of six hectares of organically cultivated vines, with all grapes being estate-grown. The winemaking process integrates traditional methods alongside modern innovations, emphasizing quality and the natural characteristics of the vineyard’s environment.
