This place is truly a hidden treasure. If you’re in London, make sure to secure a reservation, take the (rather long) train journey to Margate, and prepare to be delighted by the incredible food and exquisite low-intervention wine amidst a stunning backdrop.
Sargasso is a quaint eatery nestled within the harbour wall of Margate. The town itself is a fascinating seaside locale known for its contrasts and is famously associated with artist Tracy Emin. Located on the Kent coast, it is surrounded by other delightful spots like Faversham, Whitstable, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate, all worthy of exploration.
My initial visit occurred on a bright yet chilly winter day. The second time was during late summer, which was also sunny. On that occasion, we enjoyed a lovely lunch and then strolled to Ramsgate via Broadstairs, an experience I highly recommend. During winter, if the weather turns foul, Sargasso may occasionally close due to the waves crashing over the harbour wall.
The cuisine is delightful, featuring small plates that emphasize high-quality natural ingredients prepared with expertise. While it isn’t overly extravagant, it certainly offers a premium experience. The wine selection is thoughtfully curated, filled with hidden treasures, and remains affordably priced. For the ultimate experience, I highly suggest opting for the counter seating.
The blend of the ambiance, a laid-back yet trendy atmosphere, along with meticulous cooking and excellent wine, is simply captivating. Margate is certainly fortunate to have this establishment.
