De Wetshof, located in Robertson, is a less-celebrated gem in the South African wine scene. Renowned for their Chardonnay, the winery’s owner, Danie De Wet, was part of a group of innovative winegrowers who, in the 1980s, covertly brought quality Chardonnay vine cuttings into the country when it was the only option available.
De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2023 Robertson, South Africa
With an alcohol content of 13.5%, this wine is sourced from rocky soils rich in calcium carbonate. It undergoes a 6-month maturation on its lees without any oak influence. The result is a wine that is impressively complex and intense. This Chardonnay is beautifully focused, showcasing a vibrant core of citrus fruit balanced by lively acidity. Subtle notes of toast and spice complement the dominant flavors of bright lemon, lime, mandarin, and grapefruit. Its concentrated, taut, and mineral character suggests it will age gracefully. Priced at £15 in the UK, it offers excellent value, especially considering it retails for around 190 Rand in South Africa, approximately £8. 94/100
