Château Cantemerle, a distinguished fifth growth Bordeaux estate, has undergone a significant transformation, bringing a fresh approach to wine tourism alongside its renovated facilities. This property, celebrated for its long-standing history and quality wine, is now under the stewardship of Laure Canu, continuing the legacy of its notable former owner, Caroline de Villeneuve, who played a crucial role in its inclusion in the 1855 Classification.

Situated in the esteemed Haut-Médoc region, Château Cantemerle spans 500 acres, with half of that area dedicated to vineyards. It produces around 600,000 bottles annually, with 70% labeled as the premier vin, Château Cantemerle Grand Cru Classé. The estate’s considerable size not only aids in market recognition but also ensures value for money.

Historically, access to the estate was limited, but after a three-year renovation, visitors can now enjoy enhanced facilities and an innovative approach to wine tourism. The château dates back to 1147, with vines cultivated as early as 1354. The site has faced numerous challenges over the centuries, including changes during the French Revolution and the impact of phylloxera in the 1860s.

The recent renovations commenced in May 2022, doubling the surface area of the vat room and modernizing the winemaking process. The new cellar, featuring advanced technology, can efficiently handle grape processing from 140 microparcels across the estate. This design promotes a more effective use of space, increasing the capability to receive freshly harvested grapes swiftly.

The property also encourages biodiversity, housing a range of flora and fauna. A dedicated program aims to cultivate indigenous species and create ecological corridors throughout the vineyard. Additionally, the château has incorporated sustainable practices, such as recycling materials from its old barracks to construct a unique ceiling in the barrel cellar.

With the new emphasis on wine tourism, guests can explore the estate’s grounds, which showcase its natural beauty and biodiversity. The experience includes activities such as herbal tea creation with local botanicals and "shinrin-yoku" (forest bathing) sessions, enhancing the overall sensory experience of wine tasting.

Château Cantemerle also showcases local artisan products, pairing wines with regional foods, creating opportunities for visitors to engage with local culture and craftsmanship. The estate’s commitment to both quality wine production and an immersive visitor experience signals a bright future for this iconic Bordeaux property.
