I recently had the opportunity to reconnect with Constantino Ramos, a prominent figure in the Vinho Verde wine scene, during the Simplesmente Vinhos event in Porto. We sampled some of his latest releases, which continue to showcase his innovative approach to winemaking.

One standout was the Constantino Ramos Afluente Lafoes 2024 from the Lafoes appellation in the northern Dão region. This area has seen a significant decline in producers, now with only seven left following the closure of the local cooperative. This wine is a field blend of three white varietals, matured for six months in stainless steel with no added sulfites, relying on chestnut flour for fining. It offers a textured and supple palate with delightful pear fruit and a hint of minerality, earning a score of 93/100.

Next was the Constantino Ramos Zafirah 2024, a lightly pressed red from Vinho Verde that spent just one day on the skins due to the warm vintage. This wine boasts a lovely weight and texture, featuring fresh red fruit purity complemented by good acidity and a crunchy structure, rated at 94/100.

Lastly, the Constantino Ramos Zafirah Vinha da Rocha 2022, sourced from a west-facing plot and aged for 18 months in used barrels, presents vibrant red berry and cherry flavors. It exhibits a nice brightness with tart redcurrant notes and a rewarding acidity, also receiving a score of 94/100.

These new offerings further solidify Ramos’s reputation as a transformative figure in the Vinho Verde region, pushing the boundaries of what this area can produce.
