Rosa Kruger has forged a remarkable path in the world of viticulture, propelled by a passion for old vines and a commitment to social change. Growing up as the great-great-granddaughter of Paul Kruger, she initially faced the conservative values of her family and pursued journalism and law, but ultimately chose to abandon traditional careers to embrace the world of wine.
Kruger began her professional journey at the newspaper Beeld in the 1980s but felt disillusioned by the political climate of the time. After earning a law degree, she realized her heart wasn’t in practicing law and instead shifted her focus to managing an apple orchard. However, a conversation with a neighbor sparked her interest in viticulture, leading her to explore grapes and eventually consult for some of South Africa’s renowned wineries.
In 2016, she founded the Old Vine Project, a global initiative aimed at preserving old vineyards that were becoming neglected. The project emphasizes the cultural significance of these vines while supporting the livelihoods of the people who work the land. Kruger also runs schools to educate vineyard workers, ensuring they have year-round employment and a sustainable income to support their families.
Living a simple life on her farm, surrounded by rescued animals, Kruger boasts a deep connection with her environment which informs her viticulture practices. She advocates for working with nature, promoting sustainable methods and the cultivation of high-altitude vineyards, and highlights the importance of training vineyard workers to respect their craft.
Although she recognizes that she cannot change the world on a grand scale, Kruger passionately believes in making a meaningful difference within her sphere.
