Andrew Jefford recently explored the release of Frapin’s Millésime 1997, a remarkable 27-year-old single-vineyard Cognac meticulously crafted under the expertise of cellar master Patrice Piveteau.

When the 2025 harvest was completed, Ugni Blanc grapes—alongside a touch of Folignan—were distilled and aged in various Limousin oak casks. After a careful assessment of each cask, only the most promising spirits were set aside, monitored by an official from the BNIC. This process underscores the dedication and meticulous nature involved in producing Vintage Cognac, where every detail is crucial and regulated for quality.

Notably, Frapin takes a unique approach to creating single-estate Cognac. Unlike producers who may blend different regional profiles, every drop of Frapin comes solely from their expansive vineyard in Grande Champagne. Different soil compositions in their vineyard contribute subtle variations, but Piveteau emphasizes that maturation and wood aging play significant roles in enhancing the complexity of the final product.

Recently unveiled is the Frapin Millésime 1997, which Patrice describes as having been aged in humid conditions to achieve a soft, rounded profile. This vintage was characterized by a wet July and a sunny August, leading to its unique flavor profile. The Cognac is noted for its elegance and depth, described metaphorically as a “brilliant child” with a lively personality.

Tasting notes reveal that the Millésime 1997 presents a bright golden hue, with aromas reminiscent of freshly harvested fruits and hints of honey and spices.
