Simon Field MW recently spoke with Axel Heinz about the exciting evolution at Château Lascombes, a second-growth Bordeaux estate known for its rich history yet long-standing underperformance. After an impactful tenure at Ornellaia and Masseto, Heinz made a somewhat surprising return to Bordeaux in 2023, stepping into the role of winemaker at Lascombes, recently purchased by Gaylon Lawrence, an American investor with ambitions to rejuvenate its standing in the Margaux appellation.
Lascombes has a storied past that traces back to 1625, with notable owners including the Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes and renowned figures such as Alexis Lichine. Despite its illustrious legacy, the estate struggled under corporate ownerships, failing to reinvigorate its reputation. With Heinz’s arrival and Lawrence’s considerable investments, the duo aims to restore Lascombes to its former glory, embracing both historical elements and innovative techniques.
Heinz intends to advocate for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, which has traditionally defined the estate’s wines, while also introducing a new single-vineyard Merlot cuvée. This 2022 La Côte was launched in September 2025, immediately commanding attention for its quality and limited supply. Axel emphasizes the unique characteristics of the vineyard’s subsoil, particularly blue clay, which will play a significant role in shaping the new Merlot.
Under Heinz’s guidance, the blend of Château Lascombes is expected to evolve, progressively including a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The recent 2023 vintage showcases this shift with a 60% Cab component, indicating a thoughtful departure from the historically dominant Merlot profile. The aim is to cultivate a distinctive Margaux style characterized by energy and aromatic precision.
Weather patterns and climate change have complicated traditional winemaking, but Heinz integrates these challenges to harness the unique characteristics of each vintage. While Lascombes transitions to fewer but higher-quality bottles, the estate’s trajectory signals a commitment to its rich heritage while embracing necessary change.
In tastings conducted alongside Axel, several vintages exemplify this emerging focus. The 2022 La Côte has received notable praise for its intense, yet harmonious profile, while the 2023 Château Lascombes displays the precision and focus that Heinz aims to instill in the estate.
With a calculated approach to both tradition and innovation, Axel Heinz is poised to guide Château Lascombes through a renaissance—one that respects its historical legacy while pushing the envelope towards a promising future in the world of fine wine.
