Champagne Bollinger has unveiled its sixth edition of the Pinot Noir series, PN TX 20, which continues the tradition of showcasing the unique character of Champagne’s vineyards. The latest release, predominantly sourced from Tauxières, represents a commitment to gastronomic excellence and innovation, echoing the pioneering spirit of the late Lily Bollinger.
The PN series debuted in 2020 with the 2015 vintage, marking Bollinger’s first new addition to its lineup in over ten years. Each edition is crafted from Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from a particular Champagne village, alongside other reserves, allowing for a rich exploration of the grape’s diversity. The series is part of a long-term vision established by the late chef de cave Gilles Descôtes and is now overseen by cellar master Dennis Bunner.
Bunner recently presented the PN TX 20 at an event in Paris, emphasizing the importance of Tauxières, where Bollinger owns 18 hectares of vineyards. The differences in soil composition—from deep chalk in northeast-facing sections to clay and flint in the southwest—contribute significantly to the cuvée’s characteristics. Bunner highlighted two separately vinified wines from these areas to exemplify their distinct profiles, showcasing how these elements coalesce in the final wine.
A standout aspect of this edition is the incorporation of reserve wines, a practice Bollinger began in 1893. These wines, kept in magnums, add depth and creaminess to the blends. For the PN TX 20, the magnums from 2008 and 2012 contribute over 25% of the blend, which includes wines aged for 42 months on lees.
The tasting of the PN TX 20 reveals a complex profile: the nose is greeted by ripe, slightly smoky plum, layered with the flavors of Braeburn and Red Delicious apples. The palate reflects a continuous melody of red fruit, accompanied by a hint of salty pastry. The wine’s nuanced structure reveals notes of apple streusel and maple syrup, suggesting excellent aging potential.
Overall, Champagne Bollinger PN TX 20 is a testament to the house’s dedication to excellence in winemaking, highlighting the rich diversity of Pinot Noir while honoring its heritage.
