Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) has launched an innovative Interactive Wine Map of Marlborough, marking a significant advancement in accessing detailed information about New Zealand’s largest wine region. Developed with the help of local geospatial experts MapHQ, this digital tool is based on AMW’s original Wine Map of Marlborough and provides a comprehensive digital resource for wine enthusiasts.
The interactive map features layers that display crucial geographical information such as topography, temperature, rainfall, and soil data, all illustrated with high-resolution photography. Accompanied by insights from winemakers and viticulturists, it enables users to explore how the various elements of the terroir influence the style and variety of wines produced in the region.
Users can switch between different layers to investigate specific climatic conditions, such as the impact of cooler nighttime temperatures in the Awatere Valley, or compare the rainfall of different subregions and their resulting variations in wine flavor. This tool serves as both an atlas and a wine guide, demonstrating how Marlborough’s distinct subregions contribute to the diverse character of its wines.
In addition to enhancing consumer awareness, the map also illustrates the evolving subregional identities within Marlborough. Previously categorized into just three main zones, the interactive map divides the area into three macro regions and eight more specific subregions, reflecting its rich and complex viticultural landscape.
Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, chair of AMW, stated that the map represents a "quantum leap" in the communication of Marlborough’s diverse wine narrative. For the first time, it offers a visual exploration that helps users understand the variances that contribute to the unique qualities of AMW certified wines.
The map is freely accessible via the AMW website, significantly aiding consumers in identifying quality-focused wine producers and differentiating them from more generic offerings. It is designed to evolve over time with the addition of new data layers and vintage information, encouraging continued exploration by curious wine lovers.
