As I navigated the winding roads through the vineyards of Viognier and Syrah towards Domaine Verzier in Chavanay, a solitary figure became visible at the hill’s summit—Maxime Verzier. Upon reaching the winery, I noticed a statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the Madone d’Izeras, overseeing the surrounding vines while a crane loomed overhead, signifying construction activities.
Domaine Verzier is in the midst of transformation. The current winery is bustling yet disheveled, with barrels, tanks, and equipment strewn about as preparations are made for a new, more expansive facility. Maxime greeted me amidst the chaos, and following a brisk tour of the vineyards, we found refuge from the Mistral wind to sample some wines from his collection. This experience offered a glimpse into the promising future of the northern Rhône.
