Annie and Andy Erickson launched Favia in 2003, nestled in the heart of Napa Valley’s wine scene. Recently, they made a significant move by acquiring a 35-hectare vineyard in Oakville, a step that underscores their commitment to expanding their boutique wine operation. This vineyard, previously owned by Huneeus Vintners, will allow them to grow and enhance their brand in the competitive Napa landscape.
Both Annie and Andy have unique backgrounds that led them to Napa, arriving separately 30 years ago. Andy’s journey began in 1994 after earning a master’s degree from the University of California, Davis, and gaining experience in notable wineries like those owned by David Abreu and Harlan. The couple met in 1996, and their partnership blossomed both in life and in winemaking. They started Favia with just one barrel, eventually expanding to the successful brand it is today.
Their winery sits in Coombsville, which they lease as Rancho Chimiles, featuring vineyards planted in 1988. Annie developed a passion for Cabernet Franc while studying at the Sorbonne and visiting the Loire Valley, where she fell in love with the grape. At that time, Cabernet Franc represented only a small fraction of Napa’s vineyard area.
Favia’s vineyards are farmed organically, employing practices such as winter cover cropping to enhance soil health. Annie emphasizes the importance of careful vineyard management to cultivate high-quality Cabernet Franc, which requires meticulous canopy management and attention to soil conditions to avoid an overabundance of greenness in the wines.
Andy’s winemaking approach is hands-on, focusing on the vineyard’s expression. He employs native yeasts to allow the wines to reflect their origin authentically, with careful temperature control during fermentation to preserve the vibrant characteristics of the grapes.
The latest releases from Favia, particularly the 2021 vintage, showcase a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot from their Rancho Chimiles vineyard. Highlights include the Favia Cerro Sur 2021, praised for its vibrant fruit character and structure, and the Favia Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, which reflects the unique volcanic geology of Coombsville. These wines demonstrate the balance of power and finesse, with ripe fruit complemented by integrated oak and acidity, signaling their potential for further aging.
As Favia continues to grow, Annie and Andy remain dedicated to crafting wines that honor their roots and the Napa Valley’s exceptional terroir. Their recent acquisition symbolizes a new chapter for the winery, further establishing their legacy in the evolving landscape of Napa Valley wines.
