Chief blender Shinji Fukuyo utilized whisky sourced from the company’s renowned Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries to craft this special blend.
Hibiki 40 Year Old is heralded as ‘the culmination of countless generations of expertise and artistry, representing a singular and exceedingly rare reflection of the highest standards of Japanese craftsmanship, showcasing the spirit of innovation at The House of Suntory.’
Only 400 bottles of this exclusive whisky will be made available worldwide, each priced at $35,000 (£26,702).
Suntory, which marked its centenary last year, promotes Hibiki 40 Year Old as ‘a flawlessly balanced blend’ that offers ‘an exquisite flavor with layers of unparalleled aroma and smoothness’.
The blend consists of whiskies matured in Mizunara, Spanish, and American oak, which adds layers of complexity, a hint of sweetness, and a smooth finish.
On the nose, Hibiki 40 is described as presenting scents of loquat, dried lemon peel, and clove. Whisky enthusiasts can expect flavors of acacia honey and dried fig on the palate, accompanied by a fragrant aftertaste.
Fukuyo remarked that the whisky evokes “a sense of subduedness, akin to that of an ancient temple, along with a wabi-sabi character due to its extensive aging.”
He continued, saying, “I hope people can appreciate the refined aroma that has developed over time, the serenity of old temples and storehouses, and the nostalgic warmth that they bring.”
Artist Eriko Horiki created the washi label for the Hibiki 40 Year Old box, crafted from 12 unique varieties of Japanese wood and featuring 12 faces to symbolize the 12 months of the year.
The bottle, composed of crystal glass, is adorned with traditional Japanese maki-e, mother-of-pearl inlay, and gold lacquer, reflecting Suntory’s rich heritage and tradition.
