New Zealand has made a name for itself with Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing a delightful range of flavors across its regions. Recently, three judges tasted 163 wines and found a broad overview of what’s available currently.
Most submissions came from Marlborough, with nearly two-thirds originating from the 2025 vintage. While Marlborough continued to lead with the highest scores, other regions like Central Otago showed impressive quality. However, Hawke’s Bay was less successful in this tasting, indicating it may be better suited for other grape varieties rather than Sauvignon Blanc.
The 2025 vintage, while affected by a cool January growing season, yielded satisfying results from cautious vineyard management. The judges noted that wines benefitting from care in their production—such as aging on lees and selective oak treatment—performed significantly better.
Specifically, wines from the Awatere Valley, a sub-region known for its vibrant greens, excelled, offering fresh notes of pea shoot, lime, and green asparagus. Additionally, fewer wines attempted to mask underripe fruit with sweetness compared to previous years, highlighting a positive evolution in the quality of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Overall, the tasting revealed six outstanding wines and 57 highly recommended ones, indicating that the 2025 vintage, while not as strong as 2024, still holds promise for wine lovers.
