Esterházy Estate: Reviving Tradition with Exquisite Wines from Austria’s Leithaberg Region

By | 22 May 2026

Esterházy is a notable estate situated in the Leithaberg subregion of Burgenland, Austria, recognized for its rich historical heritage, particularly linked to the royal family who once owned the castle on the estate. This castle, still in royal hands, not only stands as a historic landmark but also serves as a venue for various musical events and a tourist attraction. The estate has a legacy of winemaking, notably associated with the composer Joseph Haydn, who spent most of his career working for the Esterházy family.

Recently, Esterházy has revitalized its wine production efforts, making substantial investments in the estate and rebranding its wines. Today, they cultivate 65 hectares of organically farmed vineyards across 21 plots, having achieved organic certification starting with the 2023 vintage. The winery’s labeling system indicates the origins of its wines—with single-vineyard expressions denoted by gold design elements.

The current range of Esterházy wines features various notable offerings:

  • Esterházy Sekt Rosé Reserve 2023: A sparkling wine made from Blaufränkisch, bright and fruity, with refreshing acidity. (90/100)
  • Esterházy Furmint Sankt Margarethen 2024: A textured and balanced village wine, displaying lovely pear and peach notes. (93/100)
  • Esterházy Pinot Blanc Grosshöfflein 2024: A stylish wine with finesse and expressive fruit. (94/100)
  • Esterházy Blaufränkisch Ried Schildten 2023: This wine comes from a monopole vineyard and offers a vivid, structured experience. (94/100)

Esterházy’s commitment to quality and sustainable practices reflects their aim to position themselves as a significant player in the competitive wine market of the Burgenland region. For more information, visit their website: esterhazywein.at.
