The Marris family plays a significant role in the winemaking landscape of Marlborough, New Zealand, connecting the region’s past to its present and guiding its future. John Marris was instrumental in the early days of Marlborough winemaking, acting as the land agent for Frank Yukich, who acquired 500 hectares of marginal farmland that would eventually showcase the potential of this now-renowned wine region in 1973. John executed this ambitious purchase in one bold move, ensuring that increased interest wouldn’t inflate land prices. However, despite this visionary decision, he didn’t reap significant financial rewards.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Brent Marris gained recognition through his work with Delgats beginning in 1985, where he launched the successful Oyster Bay brand. He later co-founded Wither Hills with his father, which they later sold to Lion Nathan. Brent now oversees Leefield Station, a 650-hectare vineyard in the Waihopai Valley, producing a diverse range of wines. While The Ned brand serves a more commercial market, Brent has also developed premium wine offerings under the umbrella of Marisco Vineyards.
Brent’s daughter, Emma Marris, is establishing her presence in the wine industry, creating wines that reflect an ambition for excellence. At a recent tasting event at Wine Paris 2026, the two delighted attendees with their wines.
