I visited Marof in May 2023 during my first tour of Slovenia and was completely impressed. Recently, I had the opportunity to reconnect with winemaker Uroš Valcl in Maribor to explore their current offerings.
Marof is located in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia, near the village of Mačkovci and close to the borders of both Austria and Hungary. This subregion, named Goričko, has a relatively modest history in grape growing but boasts numerous potential terroirs. The area now has 600 hectares of vineyards, a decline from 1500 hectares during the Austro-Hungarian empire era.
Uroš, who is originally from Maribor, has been at the helm since 2008. The founder, Stanko Polanič, passed away in June 2023, yet the winery continues its legacy with 22 hectares of vines. They specialize in long elevage, utilizing both large format oak and small barrels in their impressive cellar.
