By | 23 March 2025

Chateau Montelena, a renowned winery in Napa Valley, has made a significant investment in its future by acquiring a 29.5-hectare vineyard in the Carneros AVA to enhance its Chardonnay production. This move aligns with the winery’s storied history, as it famously secured a remarkable victory at the 1976 Judgement of Paris, catapulting Californian Chardonnay into the spotlight.

The vineyard is strategically located about 27 miles south of the winery’s current operations, which are based in the Calistoga AVA. The new site is believed to be well-suited for Chardonnay cultivation due to its well-drained loam, red volcanic soils, and favorable climate conditions typically associated with the Carneros AVA. This region is known for its cooler temperatures, making it excellent for growing both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with many grapes utilized for sparkling wine production.

Bo Barrett, the CEO, expressed that this acquisition is not just about expanding production but also about ensuring the winery’s legacy continues to thrive. He stated, "We’re not just making wine for today, we’re building a future… This new vineyard is a testament to our belief that the best is yet to come."

The planting of the new vineyard is set to begin next year, marking a pivotal step for Chateau Montelena as it prepare for the next chapter in its winemaking journey, amidst changing climate conditions and an ever-evolving industry landscape.
