Bidders at the 64th Hospices de Nuits-St-Georges auction, held on March 9, 2025, saw a significant increase in average prices, with the price per barrel rising by 41.5% compared to the previous year, reaching €22,422.50. This surge is just shy of the all-time record of €22,807 set in 2022, according to auction house iDealwine, which hosted this year’s event for the first time at the traditional location, Château du Clos de Vougeot.
The auction showcased Burgundy’s young 2024 vintage, which saw limited production due to a smaller harvest. Total sales for 35.5 barrels amounted to €796,000. The Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-St-Georges reported its lowest yield since 1961.
In contrast, last year’s auction had a larger focus on the more prolific 2023 vintage, selling 150 barrels and generating over €2 million in total sales.
Cyrille Jomand, the auctioneer and CEO of iDealwine, expressed satisfaction with the results, given the reduced quantity of the vintage. Notably, this year’s charity barrel, a white wine from Nuits-St-Georges, raised €53,900, with funds directed to the Coucou Nous Voilou children’s charity. The initiative was supported by French actress Chantal Ladesou and figure skater Philippe Candeloro.
Additionally, to enhance the auction’s appeal due to limited volumes, the Domaine released bottles and magnums from the 2005 and 2017 vintages, which produced €60,950 in sales.
Guillaume Koch, director of the Hospices Civils de Beaune, expressed delight in the auction’s outcome, which exceeded expectations for a price increase while allowing wine enthusiasts to indulge in past vintages.
