South Africa’s Organic Viticulture Struggle: 12 Producers Unite for Change Against European Standards

In the past thirty years, South Africa has made significant strides in winemaking since the end of apartheid. Despite its evolution into one of the most dynamic wine-producing countries in the world, South Africa still struggles with organic viticulture, lagging behind European counterparts.

Alex Dale, co-founder of Radford Dale, has taken a prominent role in addressing this gap by co-founding Organic Wines South Africa. This newly formed association, comprised of twelve members, is committed to adhering to stringent EU organic rules and aims to promote collaboration and growth within the local organic wine sector. The group’s emphasis is on transparency and commitment, welcoming genuine organic practices while shutting out those who merely engage in greenwashing.

Radford Dale’s approach illustrates the benefits of organic farming through its Elgin operation, which has flourished amidst conventional practices in the region. Despite challenges, South Africa’s organic wine market is beginning to garner attention from consumers, particularly in the UK, where organic wine sales have surged even amid an overall market downturn.

Dale highlights the often overlooked distinction between organic and conventional wine production, noting that many producers enter misleading claims into marketing efforts. The strict criteria for achieving organic certification not only deter unethical practices but also foster a more profound respect for the vineyards. Dale believes that the quality of wine originates not just from winemaking techniques but predominantly from the cultivation methods employed in the vineyard.

Throughout the conversation, Dale expressed a deep commitment to sustainability, reflecting the urgency felt by younger producers regarding environmental stewardship. He emphasized that the intent behind pursuing organic practices is not merely a marketing strategy but a philosophy aligned with ethical farming.

Elgin, known for its cool climate and high rainfall, is well-suited for organic viticulture. Radford Dale’s focus on Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc highlights the potential for finesse in South African wines, with the region’s conditions providing an excellent canvas for organic farming.

As they advance toward full organic certification, Dale acknowledges the economic challenges posed by certification costs and a competitive market. However, he remains optimistic about the future, believing that consumer demand for organic wines will continue to grow.

For Dale and the other members of Organic Wines South Africa, the mission transcends mere business; it is about nurturing the land, preserving the environment, and offering consumers high-quality wines rooted in genuine sustainable practices.
