Based in Wettolsheim, Domaine Albert Mann has long been recognized for its exceptional Alsace wines. Recently, the winery has elevated its status to one of the top producers in the region. During a visit with Antoine Barthelmé, the son of Jacky Barthelmé, who co-manages the estate, I learned that the Barthelmé and Mann families have been winemaking since the 17th century. Their partnership began when Maurice Barthelmé married Marie-Claire Mann.
Initially starting with 5 hectares, the domaine has expanded to 25 hectares, including the sought-after Eichberg Grand Cru, acquired in 2020. Since 1997, they have adhered to biodynamic farming practices.
Antoine mentioned that they now work with seven different Grand Crus and two Pinot Noir monopoles, focusing on enhancing their Pinot Noir production. After 20 years of effort, they received permission from the INAO to label Pinot Noir as Grand Cru. Currently, their Pfersigberg and Hengst Pinot Noirs were previously labeled differently, reflecting their commitment to quality. The vinification involves an infusion technique rather than traditional maceration, with careful grape sorting done in the vineyard.
The estate is also part of an elite association, Les Gobeloteurs, which includes notable producers like Cuilleron and Ramonet.
