Viña Zorzal is a winery located in Navarra, Spain, renowned for crafting some of the most intriguing wines not just in their region but across the country. Founded in 1989 by Antonio Sanz as Vinícola Corellana, the winery produced around 2 million bottles annually. However, a transformation began in 2007 when Antonio’s three sons joined the business, shifting the focus from quantity to quality. They sought to express the unique characteristics of their native grape varieties, emphasizing craftsmanship.
The Sanz brothers divide their responsibilities, with Iñaki overseeing the winery, Mikel managing the vineyards, and Xabi handling sales. Presently, they cultivate 52 hectares of vineyards across six villages, primarily featuring old vines. Their sustainable approach involves manual labor without soil tillage, utilizing native plants for ground cover and composting for soil nutrients. In the cellar, wine fermentations occur spontaneously, with minimal racking and limited use of sulfites.
The vineyards comprise untrellised bush vines rooted in rocky, limestone-based soils, enriched with clay. The continental climate features long, dry summers and cold winters, with an annual rainfall of approximately 500 mm.
Zorzal, meaning thrush, is symbolically represented by the bird in their logo. They not only produce their own wines but have also collaborated with winemakers like Michelini from Argentina and Niepoort.
