Fattoria Le Masse, a young estate in Chianti Classico, is led by Robin Mugnaini, representing the third generation of his family. The first wine was bottled in 2009, which marked the beginning of their winemaking journey. After his father’s passing in 2006, 20-year-old Robin crafted his first wine, yielding just 300 bottles. Today, production has scaled to 25,000 bottles annually, from their 20-hectare vineyard boasting 6,000 olive trees.
Despite exploring an acting career, Robin found himself returning every year for the harvest, a pivotal moment in their winemaking process. Committed to sustainability, the estate transitioned to organic farming in 2015 and was officially certified in 2020. Although they practice biodynamic farming, they don’t have certification due to the requirement that all farmed produce must be biodynamic.
The estate’s artistic atmosphere is nurtured by Robin’s mother, a professional artist from Berlin, and his sister, also in the arts. Together with his wife, Cecilia—a yoga teacher—they maintain a space filled with beauty and creativity.
Joining Robin for a tasting was Lorenzo Vignoli, a sculptor and amphora maker. Lorenzo’s venture into creating wine vessels stemmed from friendships with producers in the biodynamic community. His quest for suitable clay led him to discover textures that withstand high firing temperatures, and he also decorates the outer surfaces of these vessels.
For the harvest, Robin enlists friends, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the collective effort involved in winemaking.
