Marqués de Riscal had secured second place in the World’s Best Vineyards for three consecutive years—2021, 2022, and 2023—but at the awards ceremony held on Monday night, the Rioja producer finally earned the coveted first position.
It was one of three Spanish vineyards to make it into the top 10, joining the ranks of Bodegas Ysios and Abadía Retuerta.
Additonally, Spain boasted eight vineyards in the top 50 overall. Vineyards from Chile, South Africa, France, Germany, Argentina, and Uruguay also received notable recognition at the awards, which were held at Nyetimber in West Sussex.
Andrew Reed, the managing director of wine and exhibitions at William Reed, the organizing body behind the event, stated, ‘This annual ranking celebrates the unique experiences these vineyards provide, ranging from breathtaking landscapes and rich histories to exceptional dining and vineyard tours.’
The Marqués de Riscal City of Wine is famous for its avant-garde hotel, crafted by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. Guests can savor exquisite wines while taking in the view of the extensive vineyard, which dates back to 1858.
Marqués de Riscal boasts over 500 hectares of vineyards in the vicinity of its hometown, Elciego, nestled in the center of Rioja Alavesa. The primary grape varieties are Tempranillo and Graciano, with the oldest vines being reserved for crafting the prestigious Barón de Chirel Reserva.
Tim Atkin MW, who presided over the event, characterized Marqués de Riscal as ‘a unique world of pleasure engaging all the senses, and a vinous paradise’.
Chilean winery VIK took the second place for its vineyard, situated within a 4,300ha nature reserve in the Millahue Valley.
Guests have the opportunity to participate in vineyard tours and savor wine tastings, followed by an adventure exploring the nature reserve on horseback.
Claiming third place was Creation in South Africa, renowned for its exquisite tasting menus and informative tours.
Another standout from Rioja, Bodegas Ysios, secured the fourth position and also earned the Highest Climber accolade by advancing 67 spots from the previous year.
Completing the top five is Schloss Johannisberg in Germany, frequently referred to as the birthplace of Riesling.
The esteemed Champagne house Maison Ruinart ranked sixth, placing above Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Abadía Retuerta, Weingut Dr. Loosen from Germany, and Argentina’s Durigutti Family Winemakers’ Finca Victoria.
