Exploring the Hunter Valley: A Deep Dive into Margan Winery and Its Treasures

By | 20 August 2026

Margan is a notable wine producer in the Hunter Valley, recognized for its intriguing wines and a focus on newer grape varieties. Founded by Andrew Margan after leaving Tyrrells, he and his wife Lisa established their vineyard in the Broke Fordwich area. Initially, they aimed for a larger production scale to support their three young children, leading to a brand that produced 30,000 cases annually. However, they have since shifted towards a more quality-centric approach, which has included the removal of 40 acres of Verdelho, a variety that did not meet their aspirational goals.

Ollie Margan, Andrew’s son, is now actively involved in the venture, alongside the winemaker Giacomo Soldani. Together, they manage 40 acres at their primary site, showcasing significant plantings of Barbera (9 acres) and Albariño (14 acres, with intentions to expand). They also oversee a secondary site, Fordwich Hill, a sizable 120-acre vineyard planted in 1974.

The move towards regenerative farming practices has seen initial yield losses, with production dropping from 50 tons to 20, but it has rebounded to around 30 tons, enhancing quality. The family is now observing more pronounced variances based on the vineyard site, leading to an improved expression of the same varieties.

The soils at Fordwich Hill are rich in dolorite, a volcanic rock, creating a unique profile. The home vineyard includes different soil types, from volcanic to sandy soils influenced by a nearby creek.

In a recent tasting of barrel and tank samples, Andrew noted the 2026 vintage showcased remarkable depth of flavor despite a short hang time. Some standout samples included:

  • Chardonnay 2026: Features stony minerality and lovely weight.
  • Shiraz 2026 (Fordwich): Bright and elegant with refined structure.
  • Albarino 2026: Aromatic, rich, and textured.
  • Barbera 2026: Sweet cherry and berry fruits with good weight.

The finished wines received high praise, including:

  • Margan Ceres Hill Albariño 2026: Crystalline with juicy citrus notes. (93/100)
  • Margan Breaking Ground Albariño 2025: Energetic with complex floral aromas. (94/100)
  • Margan Aged Release Semillon 2013: Classic and beautiful, featuring bright citrus and honey notes. (93/100)

Margan’s approach reflects a dedication to quality, sustainability, and exploration of exciting varietals, promising a bright future as they continue to delve into the unique terroir of the Hunter Valley.
