As an 18-year-old law and business student at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, wine isn’t my usual drink of choice. My flatmates and I often enjoy spirits and mixers during our pre-drinks before heading out in the city. However, for a recent family dinner, I decided to elevate my selection beyond the typical vodka and coke.
Faced with a plethora of choices at Liquorland, I enlisted my mum’s help. I had previously found heavy red wines unappealing and lacked experience with whites outside of sparkling options. After some discussion, she suggested I try a Chardonnay, describing it as a fruity white that could suit my palate.

After browsing the Chardonnay aisle, I chose Oyster Bay Chardonnay, Marlborough, New Zealand 2023 for its personal connection: my maternal-grandfather grew up in the Marlborough region. Priced at $23, I thought it was suitable for a family gathering and also affordable enough to purchase again if I enjoyed it.
Tasting Notes
Upon my first sip, I was struck by its refreshing quality, making it perfect for a warm evening barbecue. The taste was smooth with discernible flavors of stone fruit and lemon. Unlike other whites I’ve encountered, this Chardonnay struck a pleasant balance. It encouraged me to keep sipping, a trait both my mum and I appreciated.
I paired it with grilled chicken and salad, and it complemented the meal beautifully. I could envision it accompanying seafood or being enjoyed on its own while unwinding after a long day.
Overall, I found Oyster Bay to be a solid choice. It’s fresh, smooth, and easy to drink without falling into boredom. I’d be glad to grab another bottle.
