The Gen Z Wine Challenge: Meet Emily, 26 – A New Era of Wine Enthusiasts

By | 30 April 2026

I’m Emily, a 26-year-old living in London, where I enjoy exploring the world of wine with my boyfriend. My approach to wine is straightforward; I seek good flavors, preferably paired with food, and I prefer not overindulging without reason.

My interest in wine developed during childhood, thanks to my father’s extensive knowledge, making summer trips to Tuscan vineyards fond memories that ignited my passion.

For the Gen Z Wine Challenge, I aimed to find something a little off the beaten path, opting for a bottle of Villard’s Le Chardonnay from the Casablanca region of Chile, priced at £20. I often enjoy Chablis, so I chose this option hoping for a fresh yet distinctive wine, sharing the same grape but perhaps a different character.

Tasting Notes

When I first poured the wine, it exuded bright citrus aromas, with hints of lime, lemon, and softer stone fruits like peach and pear. The scent felt richer, suggesting more complexity than a typical mineral Chardonnay.

On the palate, this wine packs a punch. It’s bolder and more intense compared to Chablis, with noticeable acidity balanced by oak undertones lending hints of vanilla. As the wine opened up, spiced apple aromas started to emerge, enhancing its appeal.

While I initially wouldn’t grab this wine for solo sipping, I paired it successfully with white fish served in a creamy cheese and parsley sauce. This pairing made a significant difference, harmonizing the wine’s acidity with the dish’s richness and resulting in a perfectly balanced experience. The oak lent depth, while the citrus notes kept the wine lively and enjoyable, improving with every sip.

In summary, this Chardonnay turned out to be a satisfying choice, allowing me to venture slightly outside my comfort zone without losing familiarity. It may not be the most refined Chardonnay I’ve tried, but it’s distinctly characterful and works excellently on the dining table. For the price, I’d certainly repurchase it, especially with the right food accompaniment.
