The Yarra Valley, a prominent region in Australia, is celebrated for producing some of the country’s finest Chardonnays. Giant Steps

Founded by Phil Sexton, Giant Steps has gained acclaim under winemakers Steve Flamsteed and Melanie Chester, focusing on single-vineyard wines with the Sexton Vineyard being the highlight for Chardonnay. Their winemaking process includes whole-bunch pressing and natural fermentation, aiming to handle the juice oxidatively initially. In recent years, they have incorporated various fermentation vessels including ceramic and concrete, while significantly increasing the space between vine rows to enhance soil health. Most Chardonnays are fermented in French oak puncheons with 15% new wood.

The Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay 2023 exhibits a near-transparent lemon hue, showcasing an impressive concentration with flavors of nectarines, orange rind, spices, and a floral hint. It’s a vibrant wine with brilliant balance and elegance, rated at 95 points.

Levantine Hill

Notable for its meticulous winemaking, Levantine Hill aims for a balance between body, flavor, and complexity in their Chardonnays. The “ultra-premium” Katherine’s Paddock Chardonnay 2019 from their high vineyards remains crisp and well-structured, flaunting citrus and stone-fruit aromas with a rich texture and impeccable oak integration, achieving 97 points.

Yarra Yering

Under the leadership of winemaker Sarah Crowe, Yarra Yering has elevated its Chardonnay to new heights. Crowe prioritizes the expression of terroir in her wines, suggesting that Australian Chardonnay should reflect its roots. Her approach includes adopting controlled malolactic fermentation based on seasonal variations. The Chardonnay 2023, sourced from the original 1969 plantings, showcases a crystalline lemon color and is delicately balanced with notes of peaches and lemon curd, currently rated at 96 points.
