Back in 1976, Christchurch neurologist Ivan Donaldson discovered his passion for wine, leading him and a group of medical friends to plant a one-acre vineyard in a chilly spot on the outskirts of Christchurch. Taking on winemaking responsibilities, he produced wine in his garage.
By the mid-1980s, Ivan sought greater ambitions and began exploring properties north of the city, where a range of hills provided shelter from the cooling coastal winds. After extensive searching, he purchased land from a farmer in 1985 and planted 50 acres of vines the following year. The inaugural Pegasus Bay wine was crafted in 1991 in his garage once again. In 1992, his son Matt, who had been studying viticulture in Australia, processed 18 tons of grapes at the newly established Pegasus Bay winery.
Today, Pegasus Bay stands as one of New Zealand’s premier boutique wineries, recognized for its exceptional Riesling and Pinot Noir, alongside a variety of other wines. A significant leadership change occurred with Matt’s departure after the 2024 vintage. The winery now sees Marie Christine Dufour, previously the assistant winemaker, taking the lead with support from an established team and international interns.
The vineyard has expanded to 40 hectares, largely situated on gravel soils. The original Terrace Block, sourced from own-rooted cuttings, is now 40 years old, while the River Block accommodates ten of the twelve Pinot clones cultivated, and the Airstrip Block includes several aromatic varieties like Riesling and Gewurztraminer.
In 2008, they acquired a 20-hectare plot to establish the Main Divide label, enhancing their control over the growing process, as this area is both windier and further inland.
