I recently attended the Cool Climate Wine Summit in Copenhagen, which kicked off with an engaging big bottle party. The concept was simple yet delightful: participating producers were encouraged to share a magnum or larger bottle, allowing for a relaxed environment to mingle and taste a variety of wines ahead of the more structured tastings planned for the following days.

Among the notable wines sampled during the event were:

  • Kox L&R Cuvée Blanc de Noirs 2021, Luxembourg: This vibrant blend of Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent exhibits bright citrus notes paired with a hint of cherry. Score: 91/100.

  • Christina Andrae Valwiger Riesling Trocken 2021, Mosel, Germany: An organic offering from a newer producer, showcasing lively citrus fruit and a stony, mineral quality. Score: 92/100.

  • Martin Schwartz Orange 2021, Sachsen, Germany: A supple wine with notes of lemon, pear, and mandarin, balanced by a hint of waxy flavors. Score: 91/100.

  • Ellwanger Pinot Brut 2020, Württemberg, Germany: This traditional method sparkling wine from Pinot Noir is fresh and crisp, demonstrating good acidity. Score: 91/100.

  • Klumpp Kirchberg Weissburgunder 2023, Baden, Germany: A standout Pinot Blanc that is fresh and nicely balanced, with pear and white peach notes. Score: 93/100.

  • By Stokkebye Vingard Liva 2022, Denmark: A Solaris wine that is wild fermented and unfiltered, offering rich fruit intensity and a spicy profile. Score: 93/100.

  • Viticoltura Rohner Erni Chardonnay Z 2021, Graubünden, Switzerland: This wine aged for 22 months on lees in oak, featuring intense limey notes with great acidity. Score: 94/100.

  • Silesian Johanniter 2019, Poland: A remarkable varietal Johanniter, with a textured profile featuring sweet pear and peach fruit, alongside citrus hints. Score: 93/100.

This gathering was not only a chance to taste exceptional wines from across Europe, including interesting selections from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, but also a platform for networking and sharing experiences with fellow wine enthusiasts. The camaraderie among producers and attendees enriched the flavor of the evening, making the Cool Climate Wine Summit a memorable event.
