Discovering Vino Gross: A Gem in Slovenia’s Styria Region

By | 29 June 2025

Last time I visited Vino Gross, I explored the vineyards of Haloze and tasted wines in the cellar. This recent visit took me to Svečina, where Michael and Maria have created a lovely home and tasting room in Slovenian Styria. Their wines have gained attention for showcasing the intersection of natural winemaking with purity and depth.

Michael shared insights into their winemaking process, emphasizing that all white wines undergo a brief maceration and are fermented in large oak casks without additives. The wines are aged on gross lees for a year before being racked, followed by an additional 6 months to a year on fine lees. Interestingly, 70% of their wines are bottled without added sulfites, a decision made with utmost care.

The 2022 vintage posed challenges, with prolonged fermentation and certain issues like volatile acidity. However, Michael is pleased with the end results, stating it’s a vintage that’s enjoyable to drink. He regarded 2021 as perhaps his finest vintage, learning valuable lessons about blending and the importance of patience before bottling.
